Jesus' home during his Ministry in the Galilee, Capernaum was a flourishing Jewish town from the 2nd century BC through the 7th century AD. Extensive remains of residential areas and the synagogue are visible, including ruins of a dwelling ascribed to the Apostle Peter by Byzantine pilgrims. The beautiful 4th-6th century white limestone synagogue overlies that of the first century synagogue where Jesus taught, and whose foundations are visible to visitors at the site.
A modern chapel has been constructed upon pillars above the remains of St. Peter's house, and extensive architectural fragments including pillars and capitals, beautifully carved lintel stones, olive presses, a Roman milestone, and much more are on display around the site. The Greek Orthodox Church and the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land control different areas of the site.
