One of the most intriguing of ancient sites in Israel, Megiddo is the source of the legend of Armageddon, the "Cataclysm of the End of Days" foretold in Zechariah 12:11 and in Revelation 16:16. The word "Armageddon" derives from the Hebrew "Har Megiddo," or "Mt. Megiddo," the hill upon which the ancient city developed. The endless battles in antiquity for control of this hill, centrally located in the fertile Jezreel Valley, and guarding the main routes between the Mediterranean coast, Egypt, and the northern regions of Assyria and Mesopotamia, gave rise to the belief that here will be fought the "battle of all battles."
Walk through this fantastic site that comprises 5000 years of ancient cities, see the early Canaanite gate and cult areas, the gate and stables built by King Solomon, who used it as his fortified chariot city, and walk through the secret underground tunnel cut through the mountain in the 9th century BCE to hide the city's main water source from enemies.
