Herod the Great's masterpiece port city on the Mediterranean, Caesarea was a 10-day sail from Rome in ancient times, and now serves as one of the most fascinating sites to visit. Still only partially excavated, you can walk through the Roman theatre (also used for performances today), the Hippodrome (for horse and chariot races, and occasional gladiatorial events, unlike today), and Herod's private palace on the sea, complete with swimming pool. It was here that Paul was imprisoned before being sent to Rome and his death, and it was here that Rabbi Akiva was burned alive by the Romans, wrapped in a Torah scroll, for refusing to desist from teaching Judaism.
