The Carmelite order began with 12th century religious hermits, who, imitating the prophet Elijah who sometimes took refuge in a cave, organized themselves in caves on the Carmel Mountain in Haifa during the Crusader occupation. These groups of hermits eventually became the Carmelite order, and live in allegiance to Jesus Christ, embracing his Gospel.
Stella Maris is a Carmelite Order monastery in Haifa, Israel’s third largest city. It is located where 12th century religious hermits, imitating Elijah’s cave-dwelling, organized themselves during the Crusader occupation .
Ecce Homo, where the residence of Pontius Pilate once stood, is the second station of the cross on the Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is today a Roman Catholic church and is thought to be the place where Pontius Pilate, proclaiming “Behold the man” (“Ecce Homo”) presented Jesus, bound and crowned with thorns, to the angry mob.
The Golden Gate – as it is known in Christian literature - is the most important gate of the walled city of Jerusalem. Known by the Jews as the Gate of Mercy it was sealed by Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Known as the scene of a meeting between Mary’s parents, the Golden Gate appears often in writings that describe the Life of the Virgin. It is said, too, that Jesus passed through this gate on Palm Sunday.
Helena is considered to be the first Christian pilgrim and a saint by the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Eastern and Roman Catholic churches, as well as by the Anglican Communion and Lutheran Churches. A 12th century Armenian church is named for her; it is located in Jerusalem in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, on the lower level.
The good news about the boat that was discovered in 1986 and is commonly referred to as “the Jesus boat” is that there is an entire museum dedicated to the boat and its story.
Ein Karem
Famous for being the birthplace of John the Baptist, Ein Karem is a village on the west side of Jerusalem and home to five different sites important to the Christian pilgrimage: St. John Church, the Visitation Church, the Russian monastery (called "AlMoskovia”) the Greek Orthodox convent of St. John and the Notre Dame de Sion monastery.
Tomb of Lazarus
The Tomb of Lazarus is located in Bethany on the Mount of Olives slope east of Jerusalem, and is thought to be a favored resting place and refuge for Jesus where he had friendships with Martha, Mary (Magdalene) and Lazarus. It was from the cemetery in Bethany that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead.
Inside the St. Anne's Church
St. Anne's Church is located at the starting point of the Via Dolorosa, near the Lions’ Gate. The church was built near the remains of a Byzantine basilica, over the site of a grotto that was believed to be the birthplace of Anne, the Virgin Mary's mother.
Golgotha
Explaining where Golgotha is located is much more complicated than explaining WHAT it is, precisely, the biblical name for the place in ancient Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified. According to tradition, Golgotha is in the area of what is now the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
