The Old City is separated into quarters: the Christian, the Muslim, the Armenian and the Jewish Quarters. The Christian Quarter developed around the Church of the Holy Sepulcher where Jesus was buried, and is at the heart of the quarter and is its heartbeat. There are other churches and monasteries around the Holy Sepulcher, but its significance overshadows nearly all else in Christian destinations. With closest access via the New Gate, the Christian Quarter is in the northwestern quarter of the Old City and extends along the western wall of the city to the Jaffa Gate. It contains nearly 40 holy places.
There are only a few residential buildings in the Christian Quarter and those that do exist are in the southeastern part of the quarter near the Jericho Gate. The buildings are mainly religious institutions, centers for tourists and educational buildings, including the St. Pierre and Lutheran Schools.
Among the 40 holy places are the Patriarchate of the Greek Orthodox denomination, the Franciscan and San Salvatore monasteries and the Latin Patriarchate which take up a large portion of the quarter.
The Christian Quarter contains coffeehouses, restaurants, hotels and souvenir shops which are concentrated mainly on David Street, which is the market street, and on Christian Road. The churches built some of the hotels for visitors to the Old City while others are private hotels.
The archaeological site of Hezkiyahu’s Pool, which was used to store rainwater for the area, is found in the Christian Quarter.
